So... You Want to Get Paid to Travel!

Oops...you caught me working again!

This article deals with the reality of working in the travel industry.

At the end of the article, I will tell you about the best kept secret (and the best travel job) in the travel industry!

I am always amazed at the people that get into the travel business with hopes of traveling the world...only to end up behind a computer screen 9 to 10 hours a day, trying to sell travel.

It is ironic that most travel agents either can't afford the money to travel (even at those great Fam Trip rates)...or they can't afford the time away from their business. Sure, they travel. But it isn't what they had hoped for. And let's face it, the money in booking travel isn't what it used to be. Most travel agents are working more for less. It is not a good sign when the closest thing you get to visiting France is the poster of the Eiffel Tower behind your desk. And going to trade show doesn't count as travel. Your plumber has trade shows in Vegas!

The same is true about all the people that get started with these new online "travel business opportunities" like Global Travel, World Ventures, Coastal Vacations, and YTB (Your Travel Business). These programs are all about selling travel, not about getting paid to travel. In most of these businesses, you end up recruiting other people into the biz-op to earn a living. Which isn't about travel at all! (I guess you are selling the "idea" of travel.)

Then you have your "traveling" jobs, like tour guides, tour directors, and cruise ship jobs. These jobs travel, but, once again, it is often not exactly like the worker had planned. Limited time off, working around the clock, and being told where to go and what to do isn't exactly like taking a vacation. Yes...at least you are out in the world, instead of an office in a shopping mall. But when you are on-call 24 hours a day... you end up so busy working that you barely notice where you are... and you end up working for less than minimum wage!

Tour guides and tour directors are often times unemployed for weeks to months at a time. Which is fine if you have something else to fall back on during the off season.

Cruise Ship Jobs and resort jobs can be fun. Especially if you are young and single. But the majority of the jobs are house keeping and maintenance jobs. There are very few jobs that allow you to "play" for a living.
